Chapter Six

In spite of danger and worry over the fate of the incredible, surprising, infuriating, and completely irresistible dragon who had come back for her, Tatiana had never felt so free, so exhilarated, and so alive.

After shifting to their dragon forms, taking out at least five of the base’s chambers and equipment in the process, she and Ranvie slammed their long, sinuous, and sturdy bodies against stone and boulders, following the tunnel through which Ranvie had entered with the aid of his dubious allies. He promised a full explanation later, but apparently the small creatures called gnomes who awaited him outside of the caverns were not to be trusted.

As far as she could tell, no one in this wretched place was to be trusted, save the sheriff and head witch of the town known as Magic. It was the town that the cowards who’d captured her planned to destroy. They would not succeed. Not on her watch.

She’d just have to convince Ranvie to aid her in her quest. Perhaps, since he’d come back for her, he was more than the self-serving rogue dragon of the warrens. He’d proven himself noble where she was concerned, and she believed that more than their friendship and this new and exciting attraction fueled his chivalrous actions. She hoped he would prove himself noble for a cause greater than his own glory.

Following Ranvie’s lead, she burst out of the tunnel to the apparent delight of a young female gnome, who clapped her small hands and cheered them on. Ranvie shifted back to human form while she perched on a nearby boulder. He sketched a bow to the gnome and spoke with her. They were too away far for Tatiana to hear their conversation, but she saw Ranvie take another handful of pistols from a large bag beside the little woman.

He left with a salute and a broad grin before walking back to her.

“What say you, my lady dragon? One for each claw? I believe our fingers are dexterous enough for it.”

Tatiana grinned with sheer delight and confirmed Ranvie’s guess. As exceptionally lithe dragons, blues could operate some devices made for human hands. They quickly found they could, just barely, work the guns with their talons.

She made magic but had never wielded it. Now, she could use these enchanted weapons to disable the fiends who’d stolen dragon magic and used it to plot against Tarakonans. Fates, they could even take these weapons to Tarakona to fight against wizard oppression. The possibilities were endless, as was Tatiana’s hope.

Ranvie transformed back into dragon form and she followed him, soaring over the cavern’s entrance and firing upon General Joan and her band of wizards. Gold magic glowed and sparkled over formerly invisible wards as the militants drove their vehicles out of secret exits, cannons at the ready.

They didn’t shoot nets from the cannons. This time, they fired sharp and pointy things.

Tatiana fired on four of the vehicles, stopping them in their tracks. She dodged three missiles. One grazed her wing, and the sting left her angry and itching for battle.
